Cross Hipped Roofing
A cross hipped (or hip) roof is typically utilized for a structure with an L-shaped plan. Hip roofs are more difficult to construct, requiring somewhat more complex systems of trusses, but they can be constructed on a wide variety of plan shapes.
Various types of architecture typically employ cross hipped roofs; one is the Italianate style, which was particularly popular from 1840 to 1880. This style called for a low-pitched roof.
The Ranch house, which was developed in California is the mid-1930s and continued to be extremely popular until the mid-1970s, is another style of architecture that typically employed the cross hipped roof.
